Engineering embroidery - Evaluation

I  began this project by thinking about how I could challenge both myself, and the brief. My initial thoughts were to look at different elements luxury cars possess, such as seatbelts, seat covers, dashboards etc. and how I could reinvent these elements in a more exciting fashion. However, after beginning my research I became interested in the idea of making Luxury more familiar. This idea stemmed from travelling on the London Underground, noticing the interior, specifically the tube flooring. I wanted to incorporate the speckled pattern of the flooring and the colour scheme into the more traditional interiors of luxury cars. As noted on the brief, “Rolls-Royce cars have developed the finest quality ‘embroidered’ high-end bespoke car interiors” so I decided to set myself the constraint of working exclusively in machine/hand embroidery during this project. VIRGIN x STAC live Brief

STAC architects were commissioned by Virgin Atlantic to design the new Clubhouse Lounge in Manchester Airport. They wanted a textile wall to be produced and came to MMU for those designs with the over arching theme being Manchester. Daisy, Chloe and I decided to work collaboratively on this project as we work in similar ways and enjoy working with similar materials and colours. We began our research by walking through Manchester paying attention to things that create the blueprints of the city. We were amazed by the amount of viaducts that still exist in the city, especially in the castle fields area. We started photographing the arches and drawing from those images. I began by thinking about the arches as a repeat pattern, using hand drawn images and photoshopping a pattern. Mid Point Review : SAMPLING

So far in this unit, I have definitely grow in confidence with regards to my approach to working. I have been pushing myself to use different processes, colour schemes and materials. With regards to my drawing I have slowly become more confident in my drawing and therefor haven’t been limiting myself to a small sketchbook and have been working on bigger sheets. Due to my drawings becoming larger, my samples followed suit, this allowed me to form a stronger link between my drawings and my samples, although I am still working on this, I didn’t expect to work so large scale considering the size of my samples produced at the beginning of this project. Giving myself more surface to work onto, I found myself keeping my work simpler, something I was probably afraid to do before. In comparison to the last unit, I feel more engrossed in my work, and have been working better independently, utilising the studio more outside of taught hours.
